The Carlsbad Desalination Project, located at the Agua Hedonia Lagoon, is the largest desalination plant to be constructed in the United States. When completed in 2016, the plant will produce 50 million gallons of water per day distributed through a 10-mile pipeline. More than a new water source, the project is the first major California infrastructure project to eliminate its own carbon footprint.

Onsite improvements will include an intake pump station and pipeline, concentrate-return pipeline, sewer connection, electrical-transmission lines, road improvements, and a conveyance pipeline. The conveyance pipeline is a 10-mile, 54-inch water-delivery pipeline that will travel eastward from the seawater desalination plant through Carlsbad, Vista, and San Marcos to the San Diego County Water Authority’s Second Aqueduct connection facility in San Marcos.

RMA Group is working on both phases of the project which include the construction of the desalination plant and its associated onsite facilities, and the installation of the 10-mile pipeline and the preliminary construction of the Aqueduct Connection Facilities. These phases will ultimately connect the desalination plant with the water supplies in the surrounding cities. RMA field technicians and special inspectors are observing, inspecting, and testing diverse aspects of the project; our involvement spans several of our areas of consulting expertise.
