Claremont Colleges Kravis Center

Claremont Colleges Kravis Center

The Kravis Center | Claremont Mckenna College
Location: Claremont, CA
Construction Cost: $56,000,000
The Kravis Center at Claremont McKenna College is a 169,000-square-foot academic and administration building constructed in the heart of the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California. The center features ascending cantilevered terraces, natural light, green space, and an all-glass “living room” that is a central component of the college’s interior courtyard. The LEED-Silver building was selected as the 2011 California Region Best Project by Engineering News Record.

RMA Group provided geotechnical consulting services for the project during design and construction of the building. During the design phase, RMA Group performed a geotechnical investigation of the building site and reviewed preliminary construction drawings. Elements of the work included subsurface investigation of the building site, laboratory testing of soils samples, review of prior geotechnical reports prepared by RMA Group for adjacent college buildings, review of published regional geologic data, and preparation of a geotechnical design report. The report included recommendations for earthwork, foundation design, and lateral soil loads for design of shoring.

Supplemental studies were performed to determine a soil infiltration rate for percolation of storm water runoff and a site-specific seismic hazard analysis.
During construction RMA Group provided geotechnical observation and testing of earthwork including excavation of the basement level, inspection of temporary shoring, fill placement, and footing excavations. Our team provided special inspection and construction materials testing of structural elements including cast-in-place concrete, structural steel, and reinforced masonry.
