The Esprit project, a $52-million commercial and residential development, was launched in 2006. Occupying 1.967 acres of land in San Francisco’s Dog Patch District, the mixed-use urban infill project includes 142 condominium units, two four-story brick-masonry buildings, and an underground parking facility that supports six new six-story, structural-steel structures utilizing the Con-Xtech proprietary seismic restraint system.

RMA was contracted to provide Materials Testing and Inspection Services, Geotechnical Engineering, and Environmental Services. The structural components of this project touch on nearly all disciplines. RMA’s personnel provided geotechnical consultation for new foundations, underpinning and shoring, foundation excavation observation, compaction testing of foundation subgrade, utility trench backfill and structural pavements. Additionally, our cross-trained technicians performed water quality testing and environmental sampling and testing for some minor soil contamination. Our special inspection services consisted of observation, inspection, sampling and laboratory testing of reinforced concrete, shotcrete, pre-stressed concrete, structural masonry, fire proofing, wood framing, roofing, shear diaphragm, structural steel and high strength bolting, shop and field welding and ultrasonic testing, concrete placement, cast-in-place concrete, and grout used for compressive strength testing and aggregate laboratory materials compliance testing. Field inspections and laboratory testing were provided in accordance with ACI, ASTM, ICC/ICBO, AWS, CWI and NDT codes.

Our construction team was directed by a lead inspector who performed inspections of field welding, masonry units, reinforced concrete, shotcrete and fireproofing. In addition to providing this broad range of expertise, he was also responsible for scheduling material for laboratory testing and organizing support staff for simultaneous inspections. He served as liaison on behalf of RMA Group for all inquiries from the Project Architect, Project Engineer, Construction Manager and General Contractor, maintaining our high standard of communication and customer service.
