San Jose Convention Center Expansion and Renovation

San Jose Convention Center Expansion and Renovation
Client: City of San Jose
Construction Cost:
RMA Group has worked with the City of San Jose for decades; we are currently working under three separate on-call consulting contracts with different entities within the city.

Under our current on-call contract with the City Building Department, we are responsible for laboratory materials compliance testing and field inspection activities. This includes the field inspection of ready-mix concrete and asphalt field compaction testing of roadway subgrade, trench, and structural backfill. We have also performed special inspection of concrete and welding activities on several city buildings such as the San Jose Police Administration Building, a performing arts center, the Sierra Road landslide, the civic center parking garage, a wastewater facility, the San Jose Airport terminal expansion, 13 City Library projects, 8 fire stations, and multiple community centers, ball fields, and bridges.

The San Jose Convention Center Expansion and Renovation is one of the more recent projects completed under this contract. This $120-million project included the reconfiguration of the former convention center and the addition of stylish design elements for the main entry. The project resulted in an additional 125,000 square feet of meeting and ballroom space. Upon completion, the project received LEED silver certification, furthering San Jose’s Green Vision.

Along with all concrete special inspections, RMA Group provided testing and continuous inspection during the installation of pre-cast concrete piles, including grout sampling as required by the project specifications. Our inspectors provided sampling services each day during grouting procedures. During piling operations, RMA provided special load testing of the grouted dowels supporting seismic bracing. Loads were applied as predetermined by the Project Engineer. RMA also provided material testing of the grout samples taken from the site to our laboratory.
Additional inspections on site include reinforced concrete inspection during reinforced steel placement and concrete pours, structural observation and materials testing during concrete masonry unit (CMU) pours, and continuous observation of intumescent fireproofing application and material testing.

These contracts have allowed us to develop a relationship with the City of San Jose, enhancing our ability to communicate long term and cater to the unique needs of our client as we grow to know more about their typical project requirements. As we strive to serve the City of San Jose to the best of our ability, we are encouraged to maintain the level of excellence that has earned us the privilege of providing our expertise on multiple simultaneous projects year after year.
